For this month’s B.A.D. Picks, we’re joined by Kampala-based electronic producer and DJ Makossiri. With a fearless, often DIY approach, Makossiri’s musical style is steeped in a wide range of influences; from experimental and industrial to psy-trance and sounds inspired by Afro-Futurism and mythology. Her debut EP ‘Juicy Juicy‘ with Nyege Nyege Tapes sublabel Hakuna Kulala stands as a strong example of this, the six tracks weaving through these influences both seamlessly and refreshingly.
Below, the depth of Makossiri’s passion for cutting edge sounds shines through, as she walks us through her current favourite Bandcamp selections.
Liye Liye – La Roche
Liye Liye is mystical and enchanting. The shattering glasses keeps you on your toes and pulls you into the world of La Roche. The vocal chants are sung in Lingala and it feels like a call from future ancestors. It’s truly a representation of new age Congolese music. The whole album drops February 21,2022 and I can’t wait to hear what else is in store.
Cosmic Slop – 700 Bliss
I love playing this track as an intro to my hardcore sets. The dark trippy beats and radical lyrics are always perfect for an underground rave.
Stella Bounce – EchoE
Stella bounce is a chill groovy track sampled from Freshley Mwamburi’s, Stella wangu, which is a famous benga tune from Kenya. EchoE fuses it effortlessly with Nairobi alt sound, Nairobi Bounce to create this dope ass beat.
Scarlet Harlot – Angel Ho
Scarlet Harlot is a track off Angel Ho’s new EP, Silent Plateau. The kicks in the intro feel like someone walking slowly on heels before picking up a faster pace. It’s laced with sexy and liberating lyrics, a gabber inspired drop and a steady flow that makes you want move your body. As a fan of Angel Ho, I’m always inspired by her versatility and constant musical output.
[MONRHEA]- [RHEA]LISTIC
The rumbling bass line and thumping kick on this 8minute track can put you in a trance state. It echo’s a ghostly night with pulsating dark rhythms.
Tembe – Basthma ft Ruby
Featuring ethereal vocals from Ruby, Nairobi-born Producer Basthma incorporates elements of Nu bounce and Future bass in this wavy track.
