Meanjin based DJ and radio host dameeela is a whirlwind force to be reckoned with. With a long list of career highlights; from support slots for artists like Skepta, A$AP Rocky and UNiiQU3 to playing major festivals like Splendour In The Grass and Laneway Festival, dameeela’s eclectic taste and deep understanding of the roots of electronic music has placed her firmly at the forefront of her city’s music scene.
We’re excited to have the trusted tastemaker take us through her current favourite selections for November’s B.A.D. picks. Check them out below.
Waak Waak Djungi – Mother I’m Going
I have been listening to a lot of dub lately and am very aware that this genre really does cross over into my community quite deeply. Not only that but their music is so … atmospheric, it takes me places of comfort. Waak Waak ga Min Min is a non-skipper. These brother boys toured the world with their gorgeous smiles, see: “Waak Waak Djungi 1998 Japanese Tour Documentary” on Youtube.
Cuckoo Coco – Acid Wash
Meanjin based and brilliant brother Cuckoo Coco pushing boundaries of hip hop, rock, electronica. I bet there’s a lot more coming from him and I’d keep my eyes and ears out if I were you because we’re really not only infiltrating but taking over every space atm.
Frank Yamma – Jay Creek Tjila (Tjaka Mix)
A track that has you entranced from the moment it begins until the very end. That building intensity, that comforting voice that just holds you in the moment.
OKA – Don’t Stop
I’ve told this story a gazillion times but I’ll never forget the first time I saw OKA at the Eumundi markets – the electronic Didgeridoo blew my mind then and still does to this day. I was lucky enough to catch them again just 2 days ago and it was as beautiful as always. This release is simply gorgeous.
Izy – Not So Tall
This whole release is a good feeling, cleanses you. This track in particular truly makes me want to dance on a sunny breezy afternoon. I can’t wait to see Izy on every lineup next year, see yas backstage <3
Napthali Willis and Messiah Long – Here Comes the Rain
Speaking of a breezy sunny afternoon, this too, imitates that. There is ALWAYS incredible music coming out of mob youth organisations, when we get together we are absolutely unstoppable (ie: Spinifex Gum).
