Just in time for labor day, HLX-1 give us the duality of Detroit techno, meeting somewhere between ghettotech and hi-tech jazz. The untitled two track teaser, a joint venture from Underground and Black’s The AM and SCAN 7’s Mr. Hooper, features the raunchy and raw ‘I Can Tell You Can F***’ and ‘The Cosmos’, a slowed down trip through time and space. Informed by The AM’s experience as a 90’s raver and Mr Hooper’s technical skills honed over the past 6 years with the mysterious SCAN 7, the tracks are a taste of an EP coming later this year.
Since moving back to Detroit from Miami last year, The AM has been trying to find a semblance of the energetic culture she remembers from coming of age in warehouse parties around the city.
“I’m determined to bring the energy back”, she exclaims when I ask her about the duo’s hopes. “I didn’t know anything about music and it was just me and my sister (Ash Lauryn) losing ourselves. Detroit needs that, that ability to just have fun.”
This is Mr Hooper’s first release outside of the Scan 7 umbrella. While not new to the game, he’s making a new name for himself by “looking forward and creating a fresh and futuristic vibe.”
